Title: Digital Content Creation: “Building a Career in Government: Internship Experience in Reform Times”
Background: This academic project was developed by me for the COMSTRAT 701 class during the summer 2025 semester, under the instruction of Michelle Galey. My goal was to narrate my internship experience with the US Department of Veterans Affairs, using digital communication tools.
Scope: I conceptualized the entire project, adhering to the assignment requirements. My role was comprehensive and involved several key elements, including brainstorming potential narratives, identifying the target audience, researching the topic, ensuring written content, and designing digital assets using both Canva and Adobe Express.
Process: The creative process involved a few critical steps:
- Topic selection. I decided to describe my experience with VA, as it seemed a timely and actual topic of interest, in the context of major governmental reforms. The overall purpose was to provide a different perspective from the inside, as major financial cuts significantly impacted new talent acquisition in federal agencies.
- Content creation and platform selection. I crafted a compelling narrative, describing the projects developed by my team during the nine-month internship, as well as the challenges posed by major reforms. For this task, I designed a scrolling web page in Adobe Express.
- Visual design. To raise awareness about the importance of governmental internships, I crafted two social media posts ( LinkedIn, Facebook), designed in Canva, and shared them with my online community.
- As a newsletter intern at VA, I used Mailchimp to design the final newsletter, which was sent to my peers from the Digital Media Engagement Department. The digital asset was completed exclusively by me, as some of the members of the Newsletter team had already left the program at that time.
- Drafting a blog post on WordPress, with details about available government internships, the application process, and potential career paths.
Lessons Learned: The most challenging part of this project was maintaining a professional, neutral tone regarding governmental reforms. Using facts, such as completed projects, proved to be more powerful in advocating for the continuation of governmental internships than expressing frustrations or subjective perspectives.
